Letting Love Guide Our Risks

So… this year we decided to take a big risk.  Our martial arts school grew very organically, almost creeping up unexpectedly into the busy community we are today.   As we reflected on our growth, we decided we were ready to do something very important to us – create an After School Program with a scholarship component.  With the After School firmly established now after a successful first year, we have officially begun the process for accepting scholarships for Fall 2019!

It’s an incredibly rewarding feeling to finally be able to offer this.  It’s also slightly terrifying.  Neither Sean nor I are particularly experienced in this type of work.  There are so many ins and outs, legal and financial issues to wade through, and a Scholarship Board to pull together!  Then there is my biggest worry, which is not being able to give a scholarship to every person who applies.

It has been daunting and wearying at times.  There is so much we don’t know yet, and much I’m sure we’ll learn by messing up.  But we do know just how empowering this kids program is, and we dream that what we offer will be able to reach across financial barriers.  That dream is what has driven us to jump into this unknown territory and face whatever challenges may come.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Love is the most durable power in the world.”  I hold to that phrase now, as I remember that the love I have, which keeps afloat my desire to do good in the world, will always be stronger than whatever fears may ebb and flow in my mind.

Unlikely as it may seem in this day and age, we will be teaching about the durability of Love as we explore self-awareness and self-control in the following techniques this week:

Martial Arts
Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri
Ukemi Side Rolls Side Break Falls
Technique 1 Blocks and Strike from Kamae Set 2
Technique 2 Leaping Up
Technique 3 Proper ukemi in kihon koshi sanpo

Kasumi Club: (most likely):  Work on the next technique for this year’s ryu.

  • Handstands against wall
  • Wall Sits
  • Cartwheel evaluation
  • Rolls Rotation (forward, back, and side)
  • Mat Strides – Safety Vault – (dive) Roll
  • Precisions course with mats

This week, the kids are persevering through Perseverance month.  They’ve been on a quest to find their “Persist Power Gem” and will find their 3rd piece this week!

Meanwhile, the adults are getting ready to host an awesome Speak Up and Move: Women’s Empowerment Self Defense Training on Saturday, January 26th (Register Here!).

Our 2 and 3 year olds will be starting their own empowering series, filled with songs, games, and stories at our Itty Bitty Bu series that kicks off Jan 26th as well!  (Register for that Here)

And of course, Spring and Summer Camp Registration and Fall After School Registration are in full swing.

Needless to say, our office is bustling!  Thank you, dear community, for supporting us – and keeping us on our toes!

Thank you as always for taking the time to stay connected and get inspired here on the blog.

See you in the dojo!
